Sofia University Center for Excellence in the Humanities “Alma Mater” occassionally offers grants for:

­ doctoral and post-doctoral research projects

­ monographic research projects

­ Internships for Bulgarian and foreign scholars 

Doctoral research projects

Expected results: Applicants should present concrete academic achievements as a follow up to their PhD dissertations 

Duration: up to 3 months

Grants: up to 5000 BGN

Post-doctoral projects

Expected results: post-doctoral research (up to 214 000 signs) along with an academic course with a term duration to be included in the academic program of one of the faculties of Sofia University  

Duration: up to 12 months

Grants: up to 9600 BGN. 

Monographic Research Projects

Expected results: completed and published monographic text (up to 540 000 signs) along with participation in the various events and initiatives held by the Sofia University Center for Excellence in the Humanities “Alma Mater”. 

Duration: up to 12 months

Grants: up to 8500 BGN 

Internships for well-known foreign scientists in Bulgaria

Expected results: research and academic activity conducted at Sofia Univesrity

Duration: up to 1 month

Grants: up to 5000 EURO 

Internships for young Bulgarian scholars abroad

Expected results: research and/or academic activity conducted in foreign educational or academic institutions

Duration: up to 3 months

Grants: up to 10 000 BGN

Following the competition procedures carried out by the Sofia University Center for Excellence in the Humanities “Alma Mater” within the last five years the following 81 grants have been offered: 

  • 16 grants for monographic research
  • 11 grants for post-doctoral research
  • 21 grants for post-graduate research
  • 6 grants for short-lasting visits of young Bulgarian academics abroad
  • 9 grants for short-lasting visits of famous foreign academics in Bulgaria
  • 15 grants for participation in the Fulbright International Summer Institute
  • 3 grants for research conducted within the framework of “Future for the Past” Project
